In 1987, Founder and Visionary, Pastor James H. Fresh, always mindful of his Mission, TO ENRICH THE LIVES OF THE RESIDENTS WE SERVE BY CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT THAT FULFILLS THEIR EVERY NEED – BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT, started to ponder the question, are we doing everything we can to serve our Residents and community? His dream, St. Mark Village, a Continuing Care, Life Care Community opened in 1980 with Independent Living and Skilled Nursing Care and was thriving. Having deep roots in the area, he had become a much trusted counselor to many, and through those interactions he realized that there was a need for a place for seniors and their families suffering with the devastating effects of dementia. Teaming up with his friend, Congressman Michael Bilirakis, who was also a great champion for our elders, they decided to construct and dedicate a part of St. Mark Village specializing in care for those with memory impairment. Opening in 1989, The Michael Bilirakis Memory Care, has helped thousands since then.
On Thursday, February 28th, 2019, The Michael Bilirakis Memory Care, opened its doors with a brand new updated look and feel. Care Center Life Enrichment Director, Kimberly Glem, describes a project she has been working on over the past year. Our Memory Care Life Enrichment program is planned and structured to improve the quality of life for each unique Resident. It focuses on physical, cognitive, emotional, social, spiritual, and creative needs and preferences, taking into account the challenges that the Residents live with every day. Activity gives meaning to life, and makes the difference in the will to engage or disengage. Our new Sensory Room will offer a place for Residents to participate in a variety of self-guided pursuits. The space is made up of diverse “stations” to involve and inspire. There are texture and busy boards for tactile sensory stimulation, a reading nook for relaxation and education, a task station for purpose and concentration, and a reminiscing area for Residents to explore and reflect. Not only can Residents enjoy the room’s features, but it provides a place where family and friends can share quality time together.
We are very proud of our legacy and tradition of excellence, but also of our dedication to innovation here at the Village. We invite you to visit us, and please go to www.StMarkVillage.org/MemoryCare to see a short video about our new and improved, colorful and light filled, Michael Bilirakis Memory Care.
